Dear St. Mary Catholic School Families,

During the month of Mary, we honor our Blessed Mother in several ways.  Some of you may have noticed that we begin each day with a Hail Mary instead of the Lord’s Prayer.  A tradition of St. Mary School is to bring flowers to be placed at each of the St. Mary statues.  Each class is assigned to one of them on our campus.  Beginning Monday, children are invited to bring garden flowers to be placed in the vases.  The teachers are aware of the assigned statues.

I’d like to congratulate Jordan Selden(8th) and Harper Williams(6th) who had won first place at the Science Olympiad Regional awards held in Wilmington.  Last weekend they traveled to Raleigh to compete in the State Science Olympiad Tournament where they placed 18th out of 46 students with their “Heredity” project.

Our school and I were honored this week by Office of the Secretary of Defense as a Patriotic Employer for supporting the National Guard and Reserve.  I will post the award in the school entrance.

Filling Sister’s Pantry – As our final Student Council outreach project of the school year, we will again sponsor a food drive for Sr. Isaac’s pantry.  During the summer months the pantry becomes depleted.  We are including a list of the needed items and a bag to put them in for delivery to school on May 16th.  The 8th grade students have chosen a special theme for this Dress Down Day – “Wacky, Tacky”.  The youngest and only child will receive the bag.  We will have extra bags if you wish to have one.

We appreciate all of your help.

The list:  Tuna, macaroni and cheese, soup, crackers, spaghetti and/or sauce, canned ravioli, Spaghetti 0’s, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, rice, and oatmeal.

The tuition rates have been set for the upcoming school year.
Other faiths – $6,150
Participating Catholic – $4,950
Falcon’s Nest PreK – $2,625 (all faiths)

Soaring Falcons XIV

Our athletic program for this school year is coming to a close and we are going to have our athletic awards night next week.  We would like to recognize our fine young student athletes on Thursday, May 10, at 6:30 in the Upper Room. I hope all of our athletes and their parents can attend. I plan to keep it short, but memorable. We will be honoring our girls who played on our Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball and Cheerleading programs. We will honor our boys who played in our Basketball and Lacrosse programs.

We would also like to introduce the Girls on the Run as well as the Girls on Track participants. They have been training for a 5 K run on May 19th.  Please try and find the time to attend. We will be saying good bye to some outstanding student athletes in our 8th grade and wishing them good luck in their future plans.

With some of the money raised from the golf outing, I am in the process of purchasing fabric to make curtains for the windows in the gym. I am looking for someone who might be able to sew a pocket and hem around the fabric. If you can help with this, please contact me.

Our Intramural Tennis program has hit the warm weather. We would like to remind parents that if you are having your child come on Tuesdays, please bring some water with you.  If you stay with them and wait until they are finished, they can take a break and have a cool drink.

Our girls who are interested in Volleyball and Cheerleading for next year have been practicing on Mondays and Tuesdays respectfully. The Volleyball program officially starts in August, but they wish to allow our 5th grade girls who might like to participate to come and see if they like it. Our Cheerleading program is doing the same for our young future girls in the 3rd grade, since we allow 4-8th grade girls to cheer.

The cheering squad is looking to have an in house cheering clinic this summer. Here they will learn and perfect new skills and routines for next year.

I am looking to start a golf program in the fall for all students who have background in golf. They would practice one day (or two), then work out a schedule to play 9 holes on another day. To do this I am looking for parents with golf knowledge and background who would like to instruct and help guide our golfers.

Our 8th grade is about to take to the hard wood one more time and take on the staff of St Mary. Next Tuesday or Wednesday at 1:30, the 8th grade will have a rematch of last year’s great fun contest. If you would like to attend, call me or the office for the actual day.

For all of you who have been there for me this whole year, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. From the beginning, when we had our Celebrity Scoops, then our 5-K Run to our Golf Outing, you have supported these events for our Athletic Booster Club. I am looking for parents to help our Boosters for next year. Everything I plan goes back to our kids and our athletic program so please get in touch and help out.

Dear St. Mary School Families,

Field Day was a wonderful success.  We had students and families on both sides of the parking lot today.  Thank you to our PreK parents who created and staffed the activities for our 3 and 4 year olds this morning. Thanks to Mr. Murphy and his committee for organizing a great morning of fun activities for the K-8 students.  I have quite a few items in my trunk that were left behind at Shelter I today.  I will place the jackets and water bottles  on a table in the cafeteria on Monday to be claimed.  Great thanks go to the 8th grade students who stepped up and shared their leadership abilities leading all the younger classes at each game station.

I want to congratulate the 2011-2012 7th Grade Duke Talent Search participants.  Eligibility for participation is an honor requiring exceptional academic ability.  This year those qualifying were Thomas Craven, Christopher Ferzola, Ryan Lopez-Merrill, Paige Lowery, Colleen Martinez, and Marissa Rhyne.  All of these students took the SAT or ACT.

Congratulations to Marissa Rhyne!  Marissa qualified for State Recognition and for the Center for Summer Studies!

Beginning next weekend and the following weekend, some of our 2nd graders will be receiving First Holy Communion.

We send our condolences to the Stanfield Family (William-5th and Walker-3rd).  Mr. Stanfield’s father passed away this week.

Blessings,
Mrs. Joyce Price
